Stepping out of the disciplined environment of the Indian Armed Forces and into a civilian administrative role can be a daunting transition, but the position of Assistant Superintendent (Ex-Servicemen) offers a seamless bridge. This role is specifically designed for Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) who have served the nation and are now looking for a stable, high-impact career within the Bihar state government. Working within the prison administration, you will be part of a system focused on reform and rehabilitation, ensuring that your military leadership and discipline continue to serve the public good.
Beyond the immediate prestige, this job offers long-term career stability and the chance to work in a structured environment similar to the one you have navigated throughout your military career. The Bihar government values the meticulous nature of ex-servicemen, making this a lucrative opportunity for those who wish to settle back into civilian life while maintaining a position of authority and respect.
Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. However, in a move to support our veterans, ex-servicemen who are Matriculate and have completed 15 years of continuous service in the Armed Forces are considered eligible, provided they have been granted a Graduation Certificate by the military.
The commission has maintained a simplified fee structure for this specialized category:
All Categories (Male/Female): ₹100.
Payment Mode: Online via Net Banking, Credit/Debit Card, or UPI.
As an Assistant Superintendent, you are not just a guard; you are a pivotal administrator within the prison walls. Your daily responsibilities involve the meticulous management of prison discipline, overseeing the welfare of inmates, and ensuring the smooth execution of reformative programs. You will likely handle a blend of desk-based administrative work—such as maintaining records and reporting to senior officials—and field-based supervision of prison staff and facilities. Your real-world impact lies in maintaining a secure environment while facilitating the "reform" aspect of the department's mission, directly contributing to societal safety and the rehabilitation of offenders.
Best For: This role is a perfect match for retired JCOs and NCOs who possess a commanding presence and a deep-rooted sense of discipline. If you enjoy structured environments, possess strong leadership skills, and have a background in managing personnel under strict protocols, you will find this role highly rewarding.
Not Ideal For: Those looking for a standard "9-to-5" office job with minimal physical presence might find this role challenging. It requires alertness, mental resilience, and the ability to handle complex human dynamics within a correctional facility. Per official guidelines, this post is not open to PwD (Divyang) candidates.
The maximum age is capped at 50 years as of August 1, 2025. Verification of age will be strictly based on the date of birth mentioned in your Matriculation/Secondary Board certificate.
This position falls under Pay Level 5 of the 7th Pay Commission. While the basic pay starts at ₹29,200, the actual take-home salary is significantly higher. Including Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA) for cities like Patna or Ludhiana, and Medical Allowances, a new joiner can expect an in-hand salary ranging between ₹45,000 to ₹52,000 per month. Additional benefits include coverage under the National Pension System (NPS) and access to government quarters or HRA.

The selection journey is divided into two grueling yet fair stages of written examinations:
Preliminary Exam: A 200-mark paper with 100 questions on General Knowledge and Current Affairs. You must score at least 30% to qualify.
Main Exam:
Paper I (Hindi): 200 marks (Qualifying only; 30% required).
Paper II (General Studies): 200 marks covering Science, Civics, History, Geography, Mathematics, and Mental Ability. This paper determines your final merit.
Document Verification: Successful candidates (6 times the vacancies) will undergo rigorous scrutiny of their military service records.
Expert Strategy: Start by mastering the General Studies section, as it carries the most weight for merit. Since there is a negative marking of 0.2 marks for every wrong answer, practice accuracy over speed. Focus on Bihar-specific history and current national events to ace the Prelims.
Q1: I am currently serving in the Army; can I apply?
Ans: Yes, provided you are scheduled to retire before the application deadline of September 30, 2025.
Q2: Is there a physical efficiency test (running/jumping) for this post?
Ans: No. Ex-servicemen are exempt from the physical efficiency test; you only need to pass the medical examination.
Q3: Can my wife apply for this post if she is an ex-serviceman?
Ans: Yes, both male and female ex-servicemen (JCO/NCO) are eligible to apply.
Q4: Is there a negative marking in the exam?
Ans: Yes, 0.2 marks will be deducted for every incorrect answer in both the Prelims and Mains.
Q5: I am from Punjab; can I apply for the SC category?
Ans: No. Candidates from outside Bihar will be treated as General (Unreserved) candidates regardless of their category in their home state.
Q6: What happens if I upload a blurry photo?
Ans: Your application will likely be rejected without any refund. Always double-check the clarity before submitting.
Q7: Can I use my husband’s caste certificate for reservation?
Ans: No. For married women, the caste and domicile certificates must be based on their father’s name/address, not their husband’s.
Q8: I have a diploma instead of a degree. Am I eligible?
Ans: You must have a Graduation degree or a recognized equivalent. Refer to your military graduation certificate if you are a matriculate with 15 years of service.
Q9: Can I edit my application after final submission?
Ans: No. You must cancel the application and register again with a new fee if you make a mistake.
Q10: What is the minimum qualifying mark for the General category?
Ans: For the final merit list, General category candidates must score at least 40% in the Main written exam.
