Job Description

If you are an aspirant studying late into the night in a tier-2 or tier-3 city, waiting for a government job that offers genuine prestige and unshakable stability, your moment has arrived. The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) has officially rolled out a highly anticipated notification for the recruitment of Bailiff and Clerk (Group-C) personnel within the prestigious Sheriff of Mumbai’s Office, operating under the state's Law and Judiciary Department. This is not just another standard administrative job; it is a pivotal role stationed right in the bustling heart of Mumbai, offering a lucrative and secure career trajectory for those willing to put in the meticulous preparation required.

Stepping into a Group-C role within the state judiciary framework means stepping into a life of respect and financial security. While the competition for these 20 exclusive posts will undoubtedly be grueling, the long-term benefits—ranging from excellent government allowances to undeniable social standing—make this an indispensable opportunity. If you have a knack for administrative excellence and meet the typing criteria, this is a golden ticket to elevate your career and secure your family's future.

🎓

Qualification

  • Graduation in any discipline from a recognized statutory university by the final date of the application window.

  • For the typing requirement, A valid Government Commercial Certificate or a Computer Typing Certificate demonstrating a speed of either 30 words per minute in Marathi OR 40 words per minute in English.

💸

Fees

Unreserved or open-category candidates are required to pay an application fee of ₹294. On the other hand, a significantly relaxed fee of just ₹44 is applicable for candidates belonging to backward classes, economically weaker sections, orphans, and ex-servicemen.

🧭

Job Profile & Impact

You might be wondering what a "Bailiff" or a "Clerk" in the Sheriff's Office actually does on a day-to-day basis. The Sheriff of Mumbai holds a unique, historically significant office responsible for enforcing the orders of the High Court. As a Bailiff, your role will be highly dynamic, involving critical fieldwork such as serving official legal summons, executing court-ordered warrants, and occasionally assisting in the attachment of properties. It is a role that commands authority and demands absolute integrity. The Clerical aspect of this position ensures you will also be managing meticulous judicial records, drafting official correspondences, and ensuring the seamless administrative functioning of the department. Your real-world impact is massive—you become the very mechanism through which the justice system communicates with the public.

🎯

Who Should Apply

Best For: This opportunity is absolutely tailor-made for graduates who thrive in structured environments and possess exceptional organizational skills. If you already have a solid command over Marathi or English typing, enjoy a balanced mix of desk work and authorized field duties, and dream of settling in Mumbai with a secure government paycheck, you should apply without hesitation. It is perfect for diligent candidates who respect legal procedures and administrative hierarchies.

Not Ideal For: Conversely, if you are someone who strongly prefers highly creative, unstructured work or completely remote desk jobs, this might not align with your personality. The role requires dealing with dense legal documents and adhering strictly to established governmental protocols. If the idea of a rigorous, protocol-driven environment feels stifling rather than empowering, you might want to explore other avenues.

🪪

Age Limit & Relaxations

  • As mentioned, open-category applicants must fall between 19 and 43 years of age.

  • A backward class, EWS, or are an orphan, your upper age limit is generously extended to 45 years.

  • Specially-abled (Divyang) candidates also enjoy an extended upper age limit up to 45 years,

💼

Salary & Perks

Financial security is the bedrock of government service. As a Bailiff or Clerk in this department, you will be placed in the highly attractive S-6 Pay Matrix, which features a basic pay scale stretching from ₹19,900 to ₹63,200.

However, do not let the base number fool you. When stationed in a Tier-X city like Mumbai, your take-home salary blossoms beautifully. Adding the current high Dearness Allowance (DA), an impressive 30% House Rent Allowance (HRA) for Mumbai, and standard transport allowances, a fresh recruit can expect an estimated in-hand salary of anywhere between ₹35,000 to ₹42,000 per month. Beyond the monthly cash flow, you secure lifelong peace of mind through the National Pension System (NPS), comprehensive state medical coverage, and the undeniable prestige of working in the state's legal framework.

How to Apply

  2. Complete the KYC Mandate: Before doing anything else, fulfill the mandatory KYC process as outlined by the commission's recent directives.

  3. Update and Validate: Ensure your profile accurately reflects your graduation details and typing certificates. For Divyang candidates, validating your UDID credentials through the Swavlamban portal integration is absolutely mandatory before applying.

  4. Upload with Precision: Upload all the required PDF documents meticulously. Ensure they are legible and strictly between 50 KB and 500 KB to avoid systemic rejection.

  5. Pay and Verify: Click on 'Submit and Pay Fees'. Once you process the payment via debit card or net banking, do not close the window until you see the 'Payment Successful' receipt generated on your dashboard.

🎯

Selection Process

The MPSC will evaluate your merit through a rigorous, single-stage written examination comprising two objective-type multiple-choice papers. The entire test carries a massive weightage of 400 marks.

Paper 1 is a language mastery test. It is divided equally between Marathi (50 questions, 100 marks) and English (50 questions, 100 marks), giving you a total of one hour to prove your linguistic competence at the 12th standard and degree level, respectively. Paper 2 tests your worldly awareness. It focuses entirely on General Studies and Intelligence Testing, throwing 100 questions at you for 200 marks, also to be completed within a blistering 60 minutes. Be incredibly cautious: the commission enforces a strict 25% (or 1/4th) negative marking penalty for every incorrect answer.

Expert Mentor Strategy: Do not dive blindly into heavy history books just yet! Because 50% of Paper 1 focuses on Marathi and English grammar, this is where you can score maximum marks with minimum effort. Dedicate your first month to mastering language rules and basic vocabulary. For Paper 2, focus heavily on the intelligence and reasoning sections, as these are highly scoring compared to the vast ocean of general knowledge. Remember, you must hit a minimum of 35 percentile (Open) or 30 percentile (Reserved) just to be considered for the final merit list.
