An Assistant Loco Pilot is the right-hand support to the Loco Pilot (Driver) of a train. This role is meticulously demanding and requires high levels of alertness and technical proficiency. Your day-to-day life involves assisting in the operation of locomotives, monitoring signal changes, ensuring the mechanical health of the engine, and maintaining constant communication with the guard and station staff.
The real-world impact is immense. You are responsible for the safety of thousands of passengers and the timely delivery of essential goods across the subcontinent. It is a field-heavy role that requires working in various weather conditions and shifts, but the pride of wearing the Indian Railways uniform and operating massive engines is a unique reward.
Technical Minds: If you have a background in mechanical, electrical, or electronics engineering and love hands-on work, you will thrive here.
Disciplined Individuals: This role requires a strict adherence to safety protocols and medical fitness.
Stability Seekers: For those wanting a lifelong government career with regular increments and extensive perks.
Those with Vision Issues: The medical standards for vision are exceptionally grueling; you must have 6/6 vision without glasses and have never undergone LASIK.
Desk Job Seekers: If you prefer a 9-to-5 office environment, the shifting schedules and travel requirements of an ALP might be challenging.
Standard Age: 18 to 30 years (Lower limit: July 1, 2008; Upper limit for UR: July 2, 1996).
Relaxations:SC/ST get 5 years, OBC-NCL get 3 years, and additional relaxations apply for Ex-Servicemen and specific categories.

The recruitment involves five stages:
CBT-1 (Screening): 75 questions in 60 minutes covering Math, Science, and Reasoning.

CBAT: A computer-based aptitude test focusing on psychological and psychometric parameters.
Document Verification (DV).
Medical Examination.
Expert Strategy: Focus heavily on Basic Science and Engineering Drawing for CBT-2, as this often acts as the differentiator. For CBT-1, practice speed-solving for Math and Mental Ability, as you have less than one minute per question. Ensure you qualify in your trade-specific Part B, as failing it disqualifies you regardless of your Part A score.
Q: Can final year students apply?
Ans: No. You must have completed your qualification on or before the closing date, June 14, 2026.
Q: Is there negative marking in the exams?
Ans: Yes. Both CBT-1 and CBT-2 have a 1/3rd mark penalty for every wrong answer. There is no negative marking in the CBAT.
Q: Can I apply to more than one RRB?
Ans: No. You can only apply to one RRB. Submitting multiple applications will lead to debarment.
Q: What is the medical standard for vision?
Ans: It is A-1, the highest standard. You need 6/6 distant vision without glasses and must pass color and night vision tests.
Q: I had LASIK surgery two years ago. Can I apply?
Ans: No. Candidates who have undergone LASIK or any corrective eye surgery are strictly ineligible for the ALP post.
Q: Is the CBT-1 score used for the final merit list?
Ans: No. CBT-1 is only for screening. Final merit is based on 70% weightage from CBT-2 Part A and 30% from the CBAT.
Q: What happens if I upload a blurry photo?
Ans: Your application is liable to be rejected at any stage of the recruitment process.
Q: Can I change my RRB after submitting the form?
Ans: No. The choice of RRB is final and cannot be modified, even during the correction window.
Q: Is there a fee refund for everyone?
Ans: No. Only candidates who actually appear for CBT-1 are eligible for the partial (General) or full (Reserved) fee refund.
Q: What documents should I carry on the exam day?
Ans: You must carry your e-call letter, a valid original Photo ID, and a recent color passport photograph.
